Engagement session locations in South Jersey, the Jersey Shore & Philadelphia
By Jay Cassario · Updated October 2026
An engagement session is the best warm-up for your wedding day, and where you have it matters. Here are six South Jersey, Jersey Shore and Philadelphia spots I love, what makes each one work, and how to plan your own.

At a glance
- Congress Hall, Cape May. Cocktails on the porch, then the beach at sunset.
- Ocean City. Dunes, open beach and the Longport bridge on the horizon.
- Barnegat Lighthouse, LBI. Tall dune grass, the lighthouse and big sunset skies.
- Renault Winery, Egg Harbor City. Golden grass, a wine cellar and the vineyard at sunset.
- Batsto Village, Pine Barrens. Historic buildings, the lake and quiet sandy paths through the pines.
- Old City, Philadelphia. Cobblestone streets, brick rowhouses and a classic city feel.
- Best time anywhere: the last hour or two before sunset.
1. Congress Hall, Cape May
Congress Hall’s long front porch, lined with rocking chairs, is a perfect place to start: grab a drink, sit down and ease into it. From there it’s a short walk to the beach and the jetty rocks, and Cape May sunsets do the rest.
Mason & Morgan started on the porch with an old fashioned and an espresso martini, then ended the evening with champagne on the sand and a run along the water as the sun went down.
2. Ocean City, NJ
For a beach session with room to breathe, Ocean City’s dunes are hard to beat. The bridge to Longport makes a beautiful backdrop as the light turns gold, and the open beach gives you space to walk, laugh and forget about the camera.
Branon & Celeste started with cocktails, popped champagne in the dune grass and brought their goldendoodle for a golden-hour walk along the water.
3. Barnegat Lighthouse, Long Beach Island
On the north end of LBI, Barnegat Lighthouse gives you two very different looks in one place: soft, tall dune grass on one side and the lighthouse itself on the other. If you can, stay through sunset. The sky over the water can turn completely pink.
With Dan & Madison, we started in the grass, walked toward the lighthouse, caught a pink sunset reflected in the water and stayed long enough for the first stars over the bay.
4. Renault Winery, Egg Harbor City
If you’d rather skip the sand, Renault Winery packs a lot into one session: golden ornamental grass, a wine cellar, a vintage tasting room and the vineyard at sunset. It’s a great choice in fall, and an easy one if you’re thinking about a winery wedding.
Morgan & Will brought their dog in a tuxedo bib, then we moved from the grass to the wine cellar and the tasting room, and finished in the vineyard as the sky went pink.
5. Batsto Village, Pine Barrens
Tucked into Wharton State Forest in the Pine Barrens, Batsto Village feels like stepping back in time: historic buildings, weathered wood and stone, a quiet lake and sandy paths through the pines. It’s perfect if you want something rustic and timeless without the crowds of the shore.

6. Old City, Philadelphia
If you’re city people, Old City is hard to beat. Cobblestone streets, brick rowhouses, old doorways and narrow alleys like Elfreth’s Alley give you a classic, editorial look, and there’s always a coffee shop or a bar nearby to make it feel like a real date.

How to plan your engagement session
- Plan around the light. The last hour or two before sunset is the sweet spot. I’ll help you pick a start time for your date and location.
- Go when it’s quiet. At the shore, weekdays and the spring and fall months mean fewer crowds on the beach.
- Bring something you love. A favorite drink, a bottle of champagne or your dog gives you something to do with your hands and makes the photos feel like you.
- Think about two looks. One dressier, one more relaxed. It’s an easy way to get variety from one session.
- Check the location’s rules. Some parks, hotels and wineries ask that you get permission first. I’ll help you sort that out.
- Have a backup date. Shore weather changes fast, so it helps to have a second evening in mind.
Somewhere personal works too
The best location is one that feels like you: the town where you met, your favorite restaurant, your neighborhood or the place you got engaged. If it means something to you, it will show in the photos.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the best places for engagement photos in South Jersey and the Jersey Shore?
A few of my favorites are Congress Hall in Cape May, the beach and dunes in Ocean City near the Longport bridge, Barnegat Lighthouse on Long Beach Island, Renault Winery in Egg Harbor City, Batsto Village in the Pine Barrens and Old City in Philadelphia. The best location is one that feels like you, so a place that means something to you works too.
What is the best time of day for engagement photos?
The last hour or two before sunset. The light is soft and warm, and at the shore you get the sunset itself. I plan every session around it.
Can we bring our dog to our engagement session?
Yes, please do. Two of the sessions in this guide included the couple’s dogs, and they’re often the best photos of the day.
Is an engagement session included with a wedding collection?
An engagement session can be built into any wedding collection at Twisted Oaks Studio. Wedding collections start at $5,200 and are custom tailored to each couple.
Do you travel for engagement sessions?
Yes. There is no travel fee within an hour of Waterford Works, NJ, a $200 travel fee for locations farther away, and destination sessions are quoted by location.
Planning your engagement session? Tell me about the two of you. I’d love to hear where you’re thinking.
